Fernando Mendoza Discusses College Football Playoff Success and NFL Aspirations

Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza, projected as the top pick in the upcoming NFL draft, sat down with Colin Cowherd to discuss his journey with the Hoosiers and the preparation for the professional league. He talked about leading Indiana to a national championship with a perfect 16-0 season and facing Miami’s resilient defense.

During their conversation, Mendoza shared insights about his development as a player since his time at UC and what influenced his decision to join Kurt Cignetti’s program. He also expressed his admiration for Tom Brady, noting how much he’s learned about quarterback play from the legendary player.

Mendoza recently met with Brady, who is a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, the team holding the first pick in the draft. He mentioned that the advice Brady provided was tough but encouraging, emphasizing a desire to mentor whichever quarterback the Raiders draft. Mendoza appreciated this direct approach, which he felt would greatly benefit him in his rookie year.

“If I am fortunate enough to be drafted by the Raiders, I think learning from someone with a track record like his would be amazing,” Mendoza said. He acknowledged that with the addition of veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins to the team, there would be even more opportunities for him to grow as a quarterback.

Despite excitement about the possibility of joining the Raiders, Mendoza likely won’t be starting immediately, as both Brady and the team’s general manager have indicated that they don’t believe he’s ready to play right away.

Interestingly, Mendoza will not attend the draft in Pittsburgh but instead will stay at home with his family. This decision is particularly poignant, as his mother has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and Mendoza wants to be there for her during this time.
