South Carolina Supreme Court Overturns Murdaugh Conviction
A jury that convicted Alex Murdaugh for the murders of his wife and son expressed their disbelief on Wednesday at the South Carolina Supreme Court’s surprising decision to overturn the verdict.
Juror Ami Williams maintained that he remained steadfast in his conviction of Murdaugh for the tragic 2021 deaths of his wife, Maggie, and their 22-year-old son, Paul. The Supreme Court found that court clerk Becky Hill improperly influenced the trial proceedings.
The judges concluded that Hill’s interference tainted the trial held in 2023.
“I never thought the court clerk was trying to push an agenda or coerce me into a specific verdict,” Williams shared with NBC News on Wednesday. “I’ve never viewed her that way.”
Other jurors voiced their shock at the court’s ruling, deeming it “crazy,” and highlighted Hill’s demeanor during the trial, describing her as “very kind.”
Murdaugh, 57, was previously serving two life sentences without the possibility of parole for the horrific murders.
Even if the verdict is annulled and a new trial is initiated, Murdaugh’s freedom is not guaranteed. He is concurrently serving a 40-year federal sentence and a 27-year state sentence for theft from a client.
“While we respectfully disagree with the court’s ruling, our office is committed to pursuing another trial for Alex Murdaugh for the murders of Maggie and Paul as soon as possible,” stated state Attorney General Alan Wilson after the unexpected ruling.
“Just to be clear, this decision doesn’t mean Mr. Murdaugh will be released. He will remain incarcerated for his financial crimes. No one is above the law, and we will continue to seek justice,” he added.
Murdaugh’s defense team had argued that Hill’s behavior during the trial compromised the jury’s impartiality.
The Supreme Court determined that the prosecution’s attempts to convict Murdaugh were undermined after Hill “put his finger on the scales of justice,” thus denying a fair, unbiased trial.
Hill pleaded guilty in December to several charges, including obstruction of justice and misconduct in office, after admitting to showing reporters sealed crime scene photos.
She also confessed to using her position to promote her book about the trial.
Hill was subsequently sentenced to probation.
