Senate Drops Trump's Border and ICE Funding Bill to Start Vacation Early

Republican divisions surrounding the bill come at a time when President Trump has endorsed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton over incumbent Senator John Cornyn. As a result, the Senate is preparing to adjourn until June without finalizing a reconciliation bill.

Punchbowl News Founder Jake Sherman shared on X: “Breaking news: The Senate is leaving without completing a reconciliation bill until June. Mr. Thune informed the senators that this is due to the Justice Department’s funding concerns. The House is expected to follow suit shortly.”

Senior reporter Brendan Pedersen from Punchbowl News remarked on X: “Mr. Thune questioned whether senators are responding to political pressures this week, amid mixed feelings towards Mr. Trump.”

Thune noted, “It’s tough to separate these events from the political environment surrounding us. They’re intertwined.” Although Republican senators have publicly cited issues with the bill as a reason for its unfinished status, Senate Minority Leader Thune admitted that Trump’s backing of Paxton over Cornyn looms large for those Republican senators who opted to leave rather than push forward with Trump’s key initiatives.

This conversation followed Trump’s endorsement of Paxton in the Texas Republican primary runoff against Cornyn, as tensions mount within the Senate ahead of the May 26 runoff.

Vice President JD Vance commented through Breitbart News correspondent Nick Gilbertson that Trump’s endorsement sends a strong signal that Congress members “must represent the will of the people who elected them.”

Gilbertson posed a question regarding whether the endorsement carries weight for senators contemplating their future campaigns or potential MAGA-aligned challengers. Vance reflected on his long-standing relationship with Cornyn but asserted that Paxton was there for Trump when it mattered most, leading to the president’s support.

Vance clarified that Trump views Paxton as potentially a “better senator” and that the endorsement aligns with Trump’s broader call for Republicans to advocate for their voters.

Vance stated, “The key takeaway is to serve the constituents that sent you. If you fail to do so, you risk misalignment with voters— and that’s not an ideal political stance.”

Andrew Desiderio, a senior congressional reporter for Punchbowl News, pointed out that some Republican senators are discussing Vance’s comments, disputing the notion that Cornyn wasn’t present for Trump during pivotal moments. Cornyn held the role of GOP whip during Trump’s first two years, participating in significant matters such as Supreme Court nominations.

On May 19, Trump expressed his “full and complete support” for Paxton, praising him as a “respected Texas attorney general” and a loyal figure within the MAGA movement, while highlighting his stances on key issues like immigration and the filibuster. However, Trump also acknowledged Cornyn as a “good man” but criticized him for not supporting him during challenging periods.

Though he finished third in the March primary and did not progress to the runoff, Congressman Wesley Hunt backed Paxton after Trump’s endorsement, urging his supporters to rally behind him for a “strong America First victory.”

This development comes after Senate Leadership Fund director Alex Latcham, an ally of Cornyn and Thune, labeled Hunt’s performance in the primary as a “career-ending vanity venture.”

In a May 20 Fox News appearance, Paxton declared: “Under John Cornyn, the MAGA agenda is dead. Just like his Republican Senate, he undermines it consistently.”

The Senate’s decision to adjourn without completing the bill also followed a report from Breitbart News indicating that Senator Thom Tillis made it clear to his colleagues that he opposed advancing the policy during that week. Tillis emphasized that Cornyn should focus on his campaign in Texas instead of being in Washington, suggesting that pressing forward with the bill might harm Cornyn’s chances in the runoff.
