A kind-hearted individual stumbled upon a forgotten fanny pack filled with $30,000 in cash in a Wawa bathroom in Florida. Rather than keeping it, he devoted several days to finding its owner, who had sold his Pokémon collection to help pay for his sister’s medical expenses.
Construction worker Luis Salazar found the black fanny pack on May 3 and was unsure what to think. It was nearly overflowing with cash, from small bills up to hundreds, but the owner had vanished from the store.
Rather than keeping the money, Salazar spent the rest of his week searching for its rightful owner. The challenge was that he had no real identifying details, just a vague memory of the stranger’s attire.
Unbeknownst to Salazar, the 24-year-old owner was distressed, believing he had lost all his money. “I thought, ‘Oh my god, I’m out of money. I’m out of bread. I don’t know what to do,'” he shared, clearly shaken.
This man had sold his beloved Pokémon cards for $30,023 to cover his sister’s medical costs. A few hours after selling the collection, he started to worry about his lost cash.
Eventually, he reached out to local authorities about the lost property. By May 7, he found himself meeting Salazar at a train station.
Salazar recounted that when he returned the fanny pack intact, the young man was overwhelmed with emotion, bursting into tears and embracing him.
“Thirty thousand dollars is nice, but it’s not my thing. I like to make my own money,” Salazar remarked, grounding the situation in humility.
Though he received praise for his actions, Salazar modestly brushed it off. The grateful owner even offered him dinner, but he respectfully declined.
“I just did the right thing. I don’t need to be put on a pedestal,” he asserted.
A few days later, the owner handed the money over to his sister, who didn’t disclose what medical treatment she required.
