Trump Shares Updates on Iran Negotiations and Middle East Ceasefire
President Donald Trump announced on Monday that discussions with Iran will persist following a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah.
The president conveyed his message through two posts on Truth Social.
“Negotiations with the Islamic Republic of Iran continue at a rapid pace. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” he wrote.
In a prior message, he mentioned that Israel and Hezbollah had mutually decided, after consultations, to refrain from attacking each other.
“I had a very fruitful telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu. There are no troops being sent to Beirut, and the troops that were heading there have already turned back,” he stated.
“Likewise, I had a very good call with Hezbollah through a high-ranking member of parliament, and they agreed that all shooting would stop, meaning that Israel would not attack them, and they would not attack Israel,” he added.
This announcement came after Iran accused the U.S. and Israel of violating the ceasefire and indicated it would suspend discussions with the United States, according to Tasnim, an Iranian news agency associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps. CBS News reported:
An Iranian news agency linked to the Revolutionary Guards noted on Monday that operations had ceased. They mentioned indirect negotiations with the U.S. and the intention to open “other fronts” in response to perceived ceasefire violations between the U.S. and Israel, particularly concerning the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
In interviews with NBC News’ Garrett Haak and CNBC’s Eamon Javers, Trump highlighted the ongoing discussions with Hezbollah and Israel, despite Iran’s recent announcement to halt negotiations.
Around midday, Haake reported that Trump mentioned he hadn’t received any direct communication from Iran about stopping talks.
“If you want to know the truth, I think we’ve talked too much. I think it’s very good to be silent, but that could go on for…a long time,” Trump stated.
“That doesn’t mean we’re going to start dropping bombs everywhere,” he clarified. “We will just shut up. We will abide by the blockade. The blockade is ironclad,” he continued, noting, “I think they can wait as long as they want. They are losing a lot of money…”
Trump’s remarks came in a telephone interview with CNBC’s Javers. He expressed indifference regarding the status of the peace talks.
“Honestly, I don’t care if it ends,” he reportedly said.
