Trump as the Peacemaker: President's Initiatives on Iran and Ukraine Take Center Stage at G7

Trump’s Visit to France Culminates with Iran Peace Memo

VERSAILLES, France—President Donald Trump’s trip to France kicked off with a G7 meeting at Evian-les-Bains, concluding with a dinner alongside French President Emmanuel Macron at the historic Palace of Versailles, where the World War I treaty was signed almost 107 years ago.

After a grand palace dinner, Trump acknowledged that he had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Iran, a move that would significantly reduce tensions between the two nations. He noted that details would likely be worked out in the next couple of months.

“It’s signed. I signed it at Versailles. I just signed it,” Trump stated to reporters, including those from Breitbart News, on his way to Air Force One.

This moment was not just historic, but it also symbolized the entirety of Trump’s presidential tour.

Following the e-signing of the memorandum on Sunday—his 80th birthday—Trump spent the following days at the picturesque Lake Geneva, engaging with other world leaders.

Trump’s agreement with Iran and the ongoing war in Ukraine were pivotal topics at the G7. Leaders predominantly discussed these issues, and not much else was addressed in the presence of reporters.

During his first bilateral meeting with Macron, which took place on Monday night, Trump publicly spoke on the deal for the first time.

“All the agreements have been signed,” he remarked, touching upon the issues of the Straits of Hormuz. “They’re looking at some mines they’ve found, but for the most part, they’re getting ready to set sail. We’ll be fully operational by Friday.” He added, “We got along very well with Iran. Different leaders now; it’s, well, a different situation.” The conversation turned optimistic, as he pointed out the plummeting oil prices and soaring stock market.

The following day, during a meeting with Qatar’s Emir, Trump expressed confidence in Iran’s economic prospects if the peace initiative continued. He suggested that the neighboring country had abundant resources and could succeed, though he stressed that Iran had to demonstrate goodwill first.

While the Emir acknowledged the positive outlook for Iran’s economy, he clarified that their priority was to ensure peace and end the conflict, rather than merely focus on economic opportunities.

He added, “Ultimately, we want an agreement first. That’s our main goal.” He suggested that if they achieved peace, investment opportunities would naturally follow.

In another meeting with UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Trump hinted at plans to expand the agreement, particularly with Arab nations not currently part of it, like the UAE had done previously.

The Abraham Accords, which normalized relationships between some Arab countries and Israel, were also a topic of conversation. Trump expressed eagerness to have more countries join in, citing the previous successes as evidence of cooperative potential.

In discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy at the summit, Trump noted the importance of finding a resolution to the ongoing conflict. He expressed that despite the difficulties between Russia and Ukraine, he had held productive conversations with both leaders.

Trump had earlier urged Russia to come to a settlement, mentioning the significant losses on both sides and emphasizing the need for a deal for lasting peace.
