Meeting between Trump and NATO Secretary General
On June 24, 2026, President Donald Trump, accompanied by Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of the Army Pete Hegseth, met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in the Oval Office. They covered various topics, including European commitments, the situation post-war with Iran, and the potential future of U.S. military presence in Europe.
During the meeting, Trump referred to Rutte as a close friend who enjoys global respect.
Rutte commended Trump’s efforts to boost defense spending among NATO countries, noting that this has been beneficial for American jobs and businesses. He presented a graph indicating the influence of what he called the “Trump Trillion” on NATO defense expenditures.
“This is the ‘Trump trillion’, an increase in military spending by Europeans and Canadians under your pressure,” Rutte explained. “And much of this funding buys American equipment and supports thousands of American jobs and businesses.”
In addition to the defense spending discussions, Rutte lauded Trump’s aggressive approach toward restraining Iran’s nuclear ambitions. He emphasized the significance of the military operation as a pivotal moment for international authority.
“This is not only your president, but also the leader of the free world who will take a leadership role if necessary,” Rutte stated, adding that Trump “has done important things against Iran to deter its nuclear capabilities.”
Trump expressed his frustration with NATO allies over their limited support during military actions in Iran, yet he made an exception for Rutte.
“If anyone else was in that position, we wouldn’t even be meeting today because, to be honest, we were disappointed,” Trump remarked. He then turned to Rutte and emphasized, “But we have a lot of respect for you.”
In a comment on NATO countries’ hesitance to assist in Iran, Trump said, “We’re disappointed in Britain, we’re disappointed in Germany and France… Spain is terrible… but I have a lot of respect for this guy, so we’re going to talk about what happened.”
