Trump to Present World Cup Trophy
FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced that President Donald Trump will be present to award the trophy to the World Cup winner on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Infantino mentioned the president’s involvement during an interview on a morning show.
“We’re going to enjoy the final with the president and hand over the trophy to the winner; of course we’ll be together. We are always together,” he stated.
Infantino seems to hold a friendly relationship with Trump, as he previously awarded him the newly established FIFA World Peace Prize after the president was removed from this year’s Nobel Peace Prize nominations.
Although Trump typically enjoys attending sports events, he has missed U.S. men’s national team games, including their recent victories against Paraguay and Australia. However, he did express optimism to the team before the tournament, saying, “I think we have a pretty good chance of making it all the way.”
“I know he’s got some international trips planned for the Fourth of July. So the only thing I can reveal is that I’ve known him for about 30 years, and he’s like an uncle to me. He enjoys a good cliffhanger,” disclosed Andrew Giuliani, Trump’s World Cup chief. He added that Trump “likes to keep people guessing, so all I can say is, ‘stay tuned.’ I’m looking forward to seeing what the next step is.”
Trump also took part in the FIFA World Cup draw at SoFi Stadium in December, where he chose the U.S. team for Group D.
The World Cup has generally been overseen solely by the FIFA president in the past. Notably, no U.S. president has ever attended the event, although Queen Elizabeth II awarded the trophy to the England team in 1966, and Spain’s King Juan Carlos presented it to Italy in 1982.
