Philz Coffee Sponsors San Francisco Pride Parade
Philz Coffee in San Francisco is stepping up to sponsor the city’s Pride Parade, committing $30,000 to support the event. This marks a return to sponsorship after not participating since 2018.
The announcement comes after the company faced backlash earlier this year for its initial plans to remove Pride flags from its cafes, which they claimed was just a change in store aesthetics. However, public and employee outrage led them to reconsider.
“We made a mistake and we sincerely apologize,” stated Philz CEO Mahesh Sadarangani.
Suzanne Ford, the executive director of San Francisco Pride, played a critical role in highlighting the flag issue. She expressed her gratitude for Philz’s effort to mend relationships with the community. “It was like, ‘Okay, we see that you’re trying to address the harm that you caused and reverse the decision,'” she shared.
Sadarangani mentioned his plan to create a “community wall” that will include Progress Pride flags, indicating a commitment to the LGBTQ community moving forward. He noted, “Philz has a very large LGBTQ community and each year we support initiatives within the community.”
Interestingly, the sponsorship comes at a time when many events like Pride are struggling with decreased corporate support. Some analysts suggest this decline might relate to recent political climates affecting corporate partnerships.
In a parallel situation, Starbucks has announced it will not sponsor the Pride Parade this year, while major tech companies like Meta and Google have also refrained from funding such events in recent years.
