Texas State Police say domestic cat played vital role in saving elderly owner from attack By the man who strangled her on Christmas Day.
San Antonio Police announced on December 27 that they arrested 60-year-old Nathaniel Charles Derouen on suspicion of assaulting a 74-year-old woman.
Investigators said the woman had allowed Derouen to live with her after his residence was damaged by a fire. According to police, the two had been dating for several years before the incident.
The woman had also allowed Mr. Deroune to use her car, but when she refused to use it on Christmas Day, Mr. Deroune became furious with her. Her man allegedly pushed her onto the bed and began suffocating her by covering her mouth and nose, preventing her from breathing.
That's when her heroic cat jumped into the fray.
The woman told police that her cat jumped on Deruan, scaring him, who has a fear of cats, and running away.
She was then able to get into her car and call police.
The affidavit states that crime scene investigators corroborated the victim's claims using alternate-light photography that can show wounds through the skin.
Derouen was charged with injury to an elderly person and assault. He is being held on $35,000 bail.
Police said the man had previously been convicted of assault, but his sentence had been deferred.
A similar story was reported in 2022, in which a domestic cat, Bandit, jumped on his sleeping owner and scratched his arm to alert him to the presence of an intruder in the home. The owner was able to take the gun, but the intruder was able to escape.
“You've heard of guard dogs,'' said the owner of the house. “This is a guard cat.”
