An Alabama man who lost his hand after police overcuffed him has decided to file a lawsuit with his local sheriff’s department. According to reports, the incident occurred on February 16, 2020. AL.com.
Giovanni Loyola, 28, claimed he was handcuffed so tightly during his 2020 arrest that he lost blood circulation to his hands. He eventually had to have his hand amputated.
The man asked the officers to loosen his cuffs, but the officers refused, leaving him in severe pain. “He doesn’t want to cause that pain to anyone,” Loyola said. Photos released after his arrest showed Loyola’s blackened fingers, suggesting he had lost blood flow to his left hand.
daily mail report Doctors tried to save Loyola’s hand by removing part of the finger, but after four surgeries they decided to amputate the entire hand. He is currently suing the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, alleging that officers used excessive force and violated his civil rights.
According to reports, the case is scheduled to be heard in April.
Loyola claimed he was watching television in his mother’s trailer when authorities showed up at the residence. AL.com said, “Deputy Godber, without answering or asking permission to enter the home, reached inside the doorway, grabbed Plaintiff by the wrist, and shoved her down the stairs outside the home.” Reported.
Loyola added that the officers pushed him into the car, pinned him to the ground and handcuffed him. He asked the officers to remove his handcuffs, but they would not listen.
“Deputy Godber refused to even loosen the handcuffs and continued to handcuff Plaintiff with the same degree of tightness until he transported Plaintiff to the Jefferson County Jail that night,” the Daily Mail reported in the complaint. It was reported that
However, authorities gave a different explanation of the situation. “Giovanni Loyola was drunk and was arguing with his family inside his official residence, which could be heard from the public street.”
“Secretary Godber attempted to restrain Mr. Loyola, but Mr. Loyola quickly became combative and shoved Secretary Godber.”
After being booked into the jail, Loyola was reportedly denied medical treatment, according to the complaint. Eventually, he went to the hospital to undergo surgery on his hand.

It is unclear what damages Loyola is seeking in this lawsuit.
