Supreme Court decision on Trump’s 14th Amendment case could come Monday

In a rare announcement, the Supreme Court signaled it plans to issue at least one opinion Monday morning as justices rule on former President Trump’s 14th Amendment case that excluded him from the Colorado ballot. suggested that it was possible.

The high court has not announced in advance which decisions it will announce on any given day, and in theory the justices could issue an opinion on any of the dozens of pending cases listed on the docket. There is.

But Sunday’s update was unusual in several ways, including that it occurred over the weekend, increasing speculation that a resolution to Trump’s historic voting ban case is imminent.

The court received less than 24 hours’ notice of Monday’s opinion, compared to the usual notice of several days in advance.

Monday is also the day before Super Tuesday, when primary voters in Colorado and a dozen other states will cast their votes for hundreds of delegates as President Trump moves closer to clinching the Republican nomination.

Since returning to in-person trials after the pandemic, judges also typically read the majority opinion aloud to a live audience in court.

However, according to an update posted on the court’s website, the court will “not be in court” on Monday for an opinion presentation scheduled at the end of the justices’ latest session.

Last month, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Trump’s appeal of a decision that disqualified him from Colorado’s primary ballot under the 14th Amendment’s anti-insurrection clause. The justices appeared reluctant to take the unusual step of removing Trump from the ballot.

The lawsuit is one of dozens across the country seeking to block President Trump from a second term over his actions surrounding the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. It is.

Justices tend to issue their biggest opinions each term in May and June, but Trump’s case is being heard quickly. Oral arguments were held on February 8, just weeks after the high court agreed to hear the case.

Monday’s opinion will be handed down at 10 a.m. ET.
