Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) said Tuesday on CNN’s “The Read” that the Arizona Supreme Court has upended a 123-year-old law that bans nearly all abortions except to save the mother’s life. He blamed former President Donald Trump for supporting him.
Anchor Jake Tapper asked, “What’s your reaction to this verdict?” For those who don’t live in Arizona, can you explain why the Arizona Supreme Court would make a decision like this?
Kelly said, “Jake, first of all, let me say this is a disaster for women in Arizona. Women in Arizona have the right to make their own decisions about abortion, and now they can’t because of Donald Trump.” So I want to be clear about that. Why did the Arizona Supreme Court do this? dobbs decision was overturned Roe vs. Wade “This has been the law of this country since 1973. Today, women have lost their fundamental rights in this state.”
He added, “There are going to be women in Arizona who could lose their lives because of this decision by the Supreme Court. Let’s be clear about this. This is what the former president wanted. He is over Roe vs. Wade As we’ve known, this system has been around for decades, and it puts women across the country in a really bad position. ”
He added: “I think what I’m more worried about is what happens next.” So I don’t think Donald Trump will be re-elected, but will his next agenda be to take away other rights? Does that mean we are stripping women of their right to contraception? ”
