Cartel Gunmen Dump 8 Bodies on Border State Highway in Mexico

Unidentified gunmen have abandoned eight bodies along a highway in the Mexican border state of Chihuahua. The bloody crime scene comes as cartel violence continues to spread across Mexico, even as government officials claim security has improved across the country.

The incident occurred Sunday morning along a highway connecting Chihuahua City and the border city of Juarez, where authorities responded to reports of bodies piled up in a field, the state attorney general’s office said in a statement. did.

Initial reports pointed to as many as 13 bodies, with some reports pointing to as many as nine. However, authorities in Chihuahua state revealed that eight bodies were left behind. Officials said there were no bullet holes in the area, so the body was likely killed elsewhere and then moved there.

Local news outlets pointed to a series of messages scrawled on posters left at the crime scene. However, authorities have not revealed the content of the messages or the criminal organization behind the mass killings.

Chihuahua state has a long history of cartel violence, with various criminal organizations vying for control of drug and human trafficking routes in the north. Several smaller organizations affiliated with the Sinaloa Cartel, Juárez Cartel, or Cartel Jalisco New Generation exist in the region and sometimes engage in turf wars.
