A transgender man who identified as female threatened a man with a shoe on a New York City subway platform over the weekend before punching him in the face, leaving the victim bleeding from the forehead, police said.
What are the details?
police told WPIX-TV The incident occurred around 6:30 a.m. Saturday at Grand Central Station in Manhattan. Police officers and emergency medical services were videotaped and the 39-year-old victim was seen holding a cloth to his forehead as blood dripped down.
The victim was placed in an ambulance and taken to New York University Langone in stable condition, police said.
According to WPIX, police said the attacker fled the scene, no arrests have been made, and the motive for the attack remains unknown.
The bureau said the attack had made subway users concerned about traffic safety.
“It was like people were being attacked randomly,” Ruben Morales, who has been riding the subway for as long as he can remember, told WPIX.
“This is New York, you have to be safe wherever you are. Just be aware of your surroundings,” subway passenger Chris J. added at the station.
WPIX cited NYPD data and noted that subway crime fell by more than 23% in March. Mayor Eric Adams previously credited the drop in subway crime to the addition of 1,000 police officers to monitor the station, the station said.
Morales didn’t seem convinced, saying authorities were “more worried about people jumping on trains than people getting attacked here. So they all stayed near the upper floors without getting off… around people. “I’m in there,” he told WPIX.
