Democratic Congresswoman Marie Grusenkamp Perez of Washington said in a recent interview. NPR The Biden administration says there is a sense of “urgency.” Restore Trump-era border policies.
Grusenkamp Perez and Group Several other “self-proclaimed centrist Democrats” are calling for the federal government to do more to address the crisis at the southern border, the news outlet reported.
In an interview Monday with NPR’s A. Martinez, Grusenkamp Perez said Biden needs to reinstate Title 42 and make the most of the “Remain in Mexico” program. “One of the fundamental mistakes around immigration,” she said, is “debating whether immigration policy is motivated by racial hostility.”
“By the way, I think a lot of them are, but a lot of people like me who live in rural and working-class communities come from communities that have been hollowed out by fentanyl, and so we are Our cousins, our neighbors, our colleagues are dying of overdoses, and we demand operational control of our southern border, perfect immigration policy. We can’t wait to do it,” Grusenkamp Perez told NPR.
Furthermore, he argued that this is not a “problem of preventing immigration,” and that “immigration itself is not the problem.”
“The problem is that the United States does not have operational control of the southern border, and that is why many Americans, many American politicians, have been seriously focused on the very visceral image of a humanitarian crisis on the southern border. But what is that?” They don’t understand what it’s like to live in a country run by a cartel,” Grusenkamp Perez continued.
The Washington lawmaker called on Biden to “exercise existing authority under Remain in Mexico.” Grusenkamp-Peres also called on Congress to give Biden “restore his powers to remove the president under Section 42.”
She argued that “unsecure borders” are not a partisan issue because they affect American communities. Grusenkamp Perez told NPR that she believes “operational control” of the southern border is “much more achievable in the short term,” noting that immigration policy is “very, very difficult.” .
“I voted to increase Border Patrol staffing and provide funding to help them understand who is entering and exiting our country. It’s not just about racial hostility. “It’s about having a predictable, level playing field that reflects the values of our country,” she added. ”[M]Your job is to depoliticize. You have to take some of the ammunition and fuel out of there and ask, “What are the components that we agree on?” Because it comes down to a choice: do we want the cartels to have control, or do we want our legal system to have control? Those are the options in front of me. ”
