Haitian man indicted for allegedly raping girl at Massachusetts migrant shelter arraigned

A Haitian man living in a Massachusetts hotel used to house migrants has been charged with child rape after allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl.

Corey B. Alvarez, 26, of Haiti, pleaded not guilty Friday in Brockton Superior Court to charges of rape and forcible rape of a child 10 years his senior, Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Crews said. In a statement.

In March, a Massachusetts judge ruled Alvarez was a dangerous person after his March 13 arrest.

Prosecutors can seek a danger order if they believe a person is a danger to the community. Under Massachusetts law, defendants can be held without bail for up to 120 days if they lose their plea, but they have the right to appeal the sentence.

Cruz said the defendants are currently being held without bail.

The judge also banned Alvarez from having any contact with the victim and ordered him to surrender his passport.

Police were called to the Comfort Inn in Rockland around 7:06 p.m. on March 13 for a report of a sexual assault.

The hotel participated in state and federal programs to house immigrant families, and Alvarez lived there.

The girl told police she entered Alvarez’s room after he offered to help her use the tablet, then forced himself on her.

After an investigation, Rockland Police found probable cause to arrest Alvarez and he was taken into custody.

Alvarez is next scheduled to appear in court on June 11.

After Alvarez’s arrest, Gov. Maura Healey assured residents that “everyone” entering migrant housing is thoroughly “screened.”

“Everyone who comes into our shelter, including him, is screened,” she told reporters in March.
