The conviction of former President Donald Trump appears to have had a negative impact on how Americans view the justice system, according to a recent YouGov poll.
The investigation suggests that the prosecution of Trump, a political opponent of President Joe Biden, has undermined confidence in the American justice system.
In just six weeks, from April 16 to May 31, confidence in the American jury system fell three points, from 54 percent to 51 percent.
The decline in trust was greater among independents and Republicans, with independents’ trust falling 4 points and Republicans’ trust falling 17 points.
Trust rose 10 points among Democrats, and there was a 35 percentage point gap between Republicans and Democrats, up from 8 points before Trump’s conviction.
Despite a growing number of Americans distrusting the jury system, few believe that convicting Trump would have a negative impact on his political career.
Only 32% of independents say a conviction would harm Trump’s career, compared with 18% of Republicans and 58% of Democrats who said the same. Overall, just 34% say it would have a negative impact on Trump.
Moreover, independents appear to be divided on whether Trump’s conviction would change their vote: 4% of independents who planned to vote for Trump before his conviction no longer plan to do so, but 4% of independents who had not planned to vote for Trump before his conviction now plan to vote for Trump.
A YouGov poll conducted before the verdict found that only 23% of Americans expected Trump to be found guilty, highlighting the potential for voters to change their minds about a guilty verdict.
