Last week, the former president hosted Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida to discuss the war in Ukraine.
This comes after Orban, who currently holds the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU, met with EU representatives in Beijing, Istanbul and Moscow as part of a series of peace missions.
The Hungarian leader has been one of the most vocal critics of the Western response to the Ukraine war and a leading advocate of opening peace talks between the Kremlin and Kiev.
Following talks with Presidents Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Orban released the letter detailing his assessment of the current situation and recommendations for the future of the European Union.
Prime Minister of Hungary Warned There is a growing view that “we will see a rapid escalation of military conflict in the near future.”
“I have personally witnessed that the warring parties are determined to get even deeper into the conflict and neither side wants to engage in a ceasefire or peace negotiations,” he said. “So we can assume that tensions will not ease and that the parties will not start looking for a way out of the conflict without significant outside involvement.”
Obran said President Trump, who is likely to win the November election, would be “ready to act as a peace broker immediately” if he wins and would not wait until he takes office, adding that he “has a detailed and well-founded plan for this.”
Therefore, he argued, the EU should start shifting its strategy to one of making “efforts to reduce tensions, create conditions for a temporary ceasefire and start peace negotiations” rather than emulating the Biden administration’s “pro-war policy.”
