Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Sunday on CBS’ “Face the Nation” that former President Donald Trump’s selection of Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) as his running mate was “the best thing he ever did for the Democratic Party.”
New York Democrats say Trump may remove Vance from the Republican candidate list.
A partial transcript follows:
Costa: Vice President Harris is now the presumptive nominee. Senator, are you encouraging Senate Democrats, including those in battleground states, to invite her to campaign and feature her in their ads?
SCHUMER: Well, the Biden-Harris track record is incredible. Like I said, all the specific things that they’ve worked with us to get passed are incredible tracks. So, this is an incredible track record, and our senators are already talking about it. They’re doing things like opening ceremonies and building new bridges, bringing broadband to rural areas, building new semiconductor factories. So, this is a very incredible track record, and it helps the senatorial candidates’ campaigns. And let me just say one thing. Compare this to the Republican track record and the Trump-Vance candidate. This is extreme. Project 2025 has shown itself to be something that will disenfranchise women. It will disenfranchise workers, it will only help the super-rich, and it’s even a threat to our democracy. And the other thing about this is the addition of J.D. Vance to this candidacy. This is an incredibly bad choice. Donald Trump, and I know him and I probably watch TV, and I think every day you see news coming out about Vance, Vance doing more extreme, more bizarre, more outlandish things. Vance seems more outlandish and extreme than President Trump, who must be scratching his head and wondering why he chose this man, which may be one of the best things he has ever done for the Democratic Party.
Costa: What do you mean?
Senator Schumer: The president has about 10 days left until the Ohio vote is finalized. And he has a choice: either keep Vance on the shortlist — Vance already has a lot of problems and will have more problems in the coming weeks, because we’re going to hear a lot more about him — or pick someone new. What is his choice?
