Community Raises $289K for Elderly Veteran Caring for Sick Wife

A 90-year-old US Air Force veteran and his wife are feeling the love in their Manchester, New Hampshire, community after they rushed to his aid in his plight.

A Vietnam War veteran named Donald Struggling WMUR reported Saturday that he was doing so while caring for his sick wife.

When her husband stopped by the local U.S. Gold & Pawn Shop to earn some extra money to pay their recently increased rent, a woman who works there named Jenelle felt she had to do something to make the couple’s lives easier, so she created a GoFundMe page.

When she handed the stack of bills to Donald, he was thrilled. show A touching moment as he was surprised with his first gift: $1,300.

“I want to kiss you, God bless you,” he told her as she described the fundraiser, to which Jenelle replied, “We want to do it too.”

“I know you’re struggling and I know you’re trying to take care of your wife and I appreciate all you do,” Jenelle said, to which he replied, “Thank you so much.”

As of Saturday morning, the GoFundMe page read: Raised They have raised $289,258 of their $300,000 goal. On the fundraising website, Jenelle wrote that Donald’s wife dementiaNow she’s trying to find the couple a more affordable place to live.

In an update on Friday, Jenelle said that the donation amount had increased and that she told Donald the news, who was surprised.

“He said he didn’t deserve it, that he was ‘just a regular guy’ but we explained to him that he was so much more than that!” she wrote.

“For now, the GoFundMe will remain open until I meet with Donald and an attorney to discuss what exactly needs to be done and how to deposit this money into a secure account that Donald has access to. There is a lot to consider and we want to make sure everything is done right,” Jenelle continued.

Speaking about his beloved wife and this wonderful gift, Donald said, “When you get married, they say you get better or worse, richer or poorer. That’s why I got married. I have a duty to my wife and I love her dearly. She is the best thing that’s ever happened to me. And of course, this is the next best thing!”

He now hopes his situation will inspire others who know veterans in need to reach out.
