Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Monday criticized the media for not doing enough to report on the dangers former President Donald Trump poses to the planet, and called on Americans to “be outraged by his words and actions.”
Clinton's comments came after federal and local authorities confirmed on Sunday that they had arrested Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, on suspicion of attempting to assassinate the former president that same day, and Trump blamed Democratic “rhetoric” on Monday for the assassination attempt. InterviewThe former Democratic presidential candidate appeared on “The Rachel Maddow Show” and, in a matter of minutes, repeatedly called former President Trump “dangerous” and did not back down on his criticism of Trump. “Sadly, the media has yet to cover Trump the way it should. They're churning out one exposé after another. What was outrageous three days ago is no longer on the front page, even though it threatens the physical safety of so many people, especially the immigrants that, as you point out, Trump and Vance have decided to demonize,” Clinton said. “I don't understand why it's so hard for the media to report consistently on how dangerous Trump is. The late great journalist Harry Evans once said that journalists should really strive to achieve objectivity. That is, they should report on the subject, he said. Well, the subject in this case is Donald Trump: his demagoguery, his danger to our country and the world. And stick with it.”
“I believe Donald Trump has repeatedly and repeatedly disqualified himself from being a presidential candidate, much less being president. What he's counting on is for the public to become desensitized. Yes, Americans need to understand that they have to take Trump's words seriously and literally,” she added. “He said what he wanted to do. He and his allies, Project 2025, his desire to be a dictator at least on day one of inauguration, all of that is on the record. And I believe more Americans should put up with what is frankly unpleasant and to some extent painful, take him at his word and be outraged by what he represents.”
Trump claimed on Truth Social in July that he had no knowledge of or involvement with Project 2025. The former president also denounced some of the document's contents.
One of Routh's social media posts echoed Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden's repeated assertions that “democracy is in the vote.” According to To ReportsCNN's Dana Bash argued Monday that Routh's anti-Trump social media posts “have nothing to do with Kamala Harris or Joe Biden.”
“The silver lining is that more and more Americans reject the kind of chaos that Harris represents. There's no turning back, as the Harris campaign has always said,” Clinton said. “We do not want to return to a romance with a dictator who has failed to protect American lives during the COVID-19 pandemic, who has put innocent lives at risk and who has made our country less safe. There's no turning back, giving this very dangerous man another chance to do harm to our country and the world.”
Clinton said in April that she believed Trump was “modeled” on dictators like Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Putin [Trump] “That's what he really wants to do,” she said. “Kill opponents, jail opponents, kick journalists out of the country, rule without checks and balances. That's what Trump really wants to do.”
