After delivering a speech in New York City in which he was “trapped” by his wife, President Biden expressed his admiration for Bill and Hillary Clinton on Monday night, telling the former first lady that he “loves her” for publicly defending him.
Biden, 81, was not scheduled to speak at the Clinton Global Initiative summit but was there to support Jill Biden and then took the stage himself to accept the Global Citizen Award.
“This is what we call entrapment,” Biden said, before thanking the former president and his wife.
“Hillary, I want to thank you. I probably shouldn't say this publicly, but I personally thank you for all that you've done to help me and for speaking up so hard for me. I can't say it. You'll have to ask Jill. Anyway, I love you.”
When her husband put his arm around her shoulder and squeezed her, she mouthed “thank you.”
Jill Biden watched and applauded lightly.
Biden praised Bill Clinton's “good sense” and “incredible intellect.”
The Clintons endorsed Biden after his disastrous June 27 debate defeat to former President Donald Trump, with Hillary tweeting the following day, “I'm voting for Biden.”
The former president and his wife supported Biden as other major party leaders questioned his mental competency and pressured him to step down. Former President Barack Obama and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi sided with the insurrectionists in the ultimately successful insurrection.
The day before Biden bowed to mounting pressure and gave up his bid for the Democratic nomination, CNN Reported Bill and Hillary Clinton had called on donors to resume giving to Biden.
Biden, who was in New York for the United Nations General Assembly this week, was introduced on stage Monday by Bill Clinton, who called his wife and Jill Biden his “two doctors.”
Hillary Clinton has a law school degree (known as a Juris Doctor (JD)), and Jill Biden earned her Doctor of Education in 2007 at age 55.
Jill Biden has taken on an increasingly prominent role as her husband prepares for retirement, fulfilling four official engagements in New York on Monday afternoon, including speaking at the Clintons' summit, an event on gay and transgender rights and an event hosted by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and UNICEF.
