The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to become a “sanctuary city” and refuse to comply with federal immigration enforcement as a way to resist President-elect Donald Trump's anticipated policies.
During his campaign, Trump promised to deport illegal immigrants, starting with criminals. More than 8 million immigrants have entered the country illegally under the Biden-Harris administration's lax immigration policies.
Local Fox affiliate station KTTV-11 reported:
On Tuesday, the Los Angeles City Council voted 13-0 to adopt a “sanctuary city” ordinance that formally prohibits city resources and personnel from being used to support federal enforcement of immigration laws.
The ordinance codifies the LAPD's practice under former Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti's Executive Order and Special Order No. 40 requiring local resources, particularly law enforcement, to cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
That doesn't mean federal agencies can't do their jobs in Los Angeles. ICE can raid crime scenes, but it cannot request that the Los Angeles Police Department or Sheriff's Department hand over undocumented immigrants who have been jailed for misdemeanors, for example.
California as a whole adopted “sanctuary state” policies during President Trump's first term, and most of them survived court challenges. However, some communities rebelled and passed ordinances denouncing the state's policies and affirming their support for enforcement of current immigration laws.
