California May Fight Trump’s Mass Deportations by Giving Lawyers to Illegal Aliens

Sanctuary California is considering sending lawyers to illegal aliens who are at risk of being deported due to President-elect Donald Trump's mass deportation campaign, said Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) ) suggested.

Asked in an interview with CBS News what California could do to counter President Trump's plan, Padilla said, “If it's legal aid, legal advice, legal assistance, that's exactly what California is doing. That's the way to do it.'' “We embrace diversity. Our diversity has made our communities thrive and our economies thrive.”

“Therefore, we support families against the threat posed by the Trump administration,” Padilla continued.

Let's get down to business now, shall we? You know, we've been hearing a lot of hyperbole from Trump and his allies about, on the one hand, this being the largest deportation operation in our nation's history, and on the other hand, probably focusing on violent criminals. No one disputes the focus on violent criminals — both Democrats and Republicans agree. That's very different from millions of people being deported indiscriminately.

Already, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has called the state Legislature into a special session to “stop Trump” in sanctuary states, including passing $25 million to be used in a planned lawsuit against the incoming administration. convened.

As part of that effort, Newsom and state Democrats may set aside millions of dollars to fund lawyers for illegal aliens caught up in President Trump's deportation operations, Padilla suggested. did.

Such a move is not unprecedented for California.

Last year, Mr. Newsom announced a pilot program that would spend $4.5 million on lawyers for undocumented immigrants working on California farms. Lawyers not only represented such immigrants, but also provided case review services and legal advice.

Since 2015, California has poured millions of state taxpayer dollars into lawyers representing nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) who help illegal aliens fight deportation orders in immigration court.
