San Diego Democrat says California sanctuary policies are too weak, calls for stronger protections against ICE

The proposed sanctuary city policy by Democratic county supervisors would go far beyond what Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom already imposes in California.

Nora Vargas, Chair of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. said California's protections for illegal aliens are not strong enough and he has proposed a proposal that would further frustrate deportation efforts.

“Sanctuary policies are reckless, dangerous, and put innocent lives at risk.”

“San Diego County has a vested interest in efficiently managing resources while maintaining public safety and effective law enforcement. [Immigration and Customs Enforcement]”Including specifically notifying ICE of immigrants' release dates, the county avoids treating groups of individuals differently based solely on their immigration status,” the resolution states.

The resolution would restrict all San Diego County employees from cooperating with ICE on immigration enforcement efforts related to civil violations, but would not limit cooperating with investigations into suspected criminal violations.

Vargas said all San Diegans are at greater risk when undocumented immigrants are afraid to report crimes to law enforcement officials to avoid possible deportation.

Republican County Supervisor Jim Desmond said Fox News said he would vote against the bill because it could put the public at risk.

“Sanctuary policies are reckless, dangerous, and put innocent lives at risk. Every American family deserves safety,” he said. “No community should have to suffer the loss of a loved one because of politically driven policies that protect rather than hold criminals accountable.”

Tom Homan, President Trump's nominee for border czar in the incoming administration, has warned that local officials who interfere with ICE operations are breaking the law and will seek criminal prosecution. Some have warned that the federal government will withhold funding from local governments that don't cooperate with ICE.

Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced a campaign to pass legislation that opposes President-elect Donald Trump's policies. Part of that effort includes funneling millions of dollars to the attorney general's office to file lawsuits against the incoming administration.

a profile Vargas of Voice of San Diego described her as the first “bi-national” person on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors and the first immigrant on the board.
