NYC man charged with attempted murder after allegedly shoving commuter in path of subway

A man is in critical condition after being pushed onto New York City subway tracks on New Year's Eve, the latest in a spate of violent incidents in the nation's busiest subways.

New York City police received a 911 call Tuesday afternoon reporting an assault in progress at a New York City subway station.

Officers responded and found a 45-year-old man had been thrown onto the subway tracks and then struck by a southbound train, authorities said.

The ordeal was captured on video, showing a hooded man sitting on the edge of the platform and the victim looking at his mobile phone as the train entered the station.

The video then shows an unsuspecting man being pushed onto the tracks and disappearing beneath the train.

Kamel Hawkins, 23, was charged with attempted murder after he allegedly shoved an unknown man, police said.

The victim, a 45-year-old man, was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Tuesday's violence comes less than two weeks after a woman, Debrina Khawam, 57, was set on fire as she slept on a Brooklyn train on Dec. 22. The woman died and the man was charged with murder and arson. her death.
