Three surveillance videos show a man keyring a Tesla electric vehicle after walking his dog. The fourth shows the man hurting something to Tesla in the parking lot of the target retailer.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara pointed out that arresting Tesla vehicles are equipped with surveillance cameras.
“It’s true, there are many cameras downtown, and the city has cameras in many neighborhoods in the city. And when there’s an issue in the area, they often deploy mobile trailers on video. These cases in particular have high quality video from the vehicle itself.”
O’Hara described the Tesla vehicle as “a rolling surveillance vehicle with a camera that he has.”
O’Hara said destroying a Tesla equipped with surveillance cameras was “frankly… quite stupid.”
“All these cars have high quality videos,” O’Hara said. “It’s putting the spotlight on you and committing a crime.”
When asked if he believed Tesla’s attacks by suspects in custody were politically motivated, O’Hara replied.
O’Hara noted that other branded cars don’t target vandalism at a higher rate than Tesla vehicles.
O’Hara said it is likely that the suspects committed “fee-level property damage,” and he added that the damage “has hurt individual victims in these cases” and “harm the people in this city who own these cars.”
Police said the suspect had no previous criminal history.
O’Hara said he believes there is another suspect in destroying a Tesla vehicle in Minneapolis.
The attack on the Tesla vehicle comes after Gov. Tim Waltz was denounced online last month to celebrate Tesla’s fall stock.
“Some people know this. On the iPhone they have that little stock app. I’ll add Tesla to it and give it a little boost during the day. I’ll drop it with $225,” Waltz said at a rally last month.
Waltz returned the comments after it was revealed that the state pension funds of more than 200,000 shares of Tesla shares are found to have a large portion of its Tesla stock.
Waltz claimed that his statement was “joking.”
“You need to be aware that it’s a smart session. I was kidding,” Waltz said. I said. “These people don’t have a sense of humor. They’re the most literal people. My point is, they’re all mad and I said something… maybe not about the company.”
