World Press Freedom Day: Free my father Jimmy Lai, who shared what China’s leaders wanted to keep silent

George Orwell once said that true freedom essentially means the right to convey ideas—even the uncomfortable ones. On World Reporter’s Freedom Day, we should reflect on those who sacrificed their liberty to uphold this principle.

One such individual is Jimmy Lai, who currently resides in Hong Kong’s largest security prison. His only “crime”? Speaking out against the Chinese authorities. It’s a stark reminder of the cost of free expression.

Jimmy’s life is a remarkable journey. He moved to Hong Kong from communist China at the tender age of 12 and faced hardship as a child laborer in a clothing factory. Despite the odds, he worked his way up and eventually bought a bankrupt garment factory in 1975, creating what would become Giordano, an international clothing brand.

The 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre changed everything for him. Witnessing such violence against peaceful protesters, he shifted his focus from business to activism, determined to champion human rights in Hong Kong.

In 1995, he founded Apple Daily, aiming to be a voice for free speech and democracy. He invested $100 million from his own fortune to ensure its independence, using it as a platform to challenge the Chinese Communist Party and uncover corruption. His empire, which also includes a magazine, became a rallying center for Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement, uniting citizens against authority.

His outspoken stance did not come without repercussions. The CCP labeled him a “troublemaker,” leading to retaliation against his businesses, including shutting down his Giordano store in Beijing. Still, he stood firm, believing in the mantra that “information equals choice, and choice equals freedom.”

Unlike many other business leaders in Hong Kong who opted for silence to protect their interests, Jimmy faced threats, arrests, and ultimately imprisonment for his beliefs. In 2014, he was detained at a protest, and in 2020, he was arrested again under Beijing’s tightened National Security laws.

Despite the imminent danger, he made the conscious decision to remain in Hong Kong, unyielding in his resolve.

His life exemplifies the strength of conviction. More than a businessman or media mogul, Jimmy Lai symbolizes freedom and hope. As an immigrant who has often felt like an outsider, he challenges the status quo with his unique perspective.

Although he has faced significant challenges, including arrest in April 2020, his humanity shines through. He misses the simple joys of family life—the sound of laughter and shared prayers at the dinner table. Those moments are what he longs to return to.

In the U.S., political leaders have expressed their commitment to securing his freedom. President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have emphasized their efforts to advocate for those detained abroad, highlighting Jimmy’s case specifically.

Jimmy enjoys widespread bipartisan support both in the U.S. and internationally. Various governments, including the UK, Canada, and EU nations, are calling for his immediate and unconditional release. Acknowledged for his courage, he is set to receive the Bradley Award in Washington this coming May, yet he remains behind bars.

Among the ten journalists still incarcerated in Hong Kong, Jimmy stands out but represents a broader struggle. Each fought valiantly for truth and their right to voice against oppression. Their courage reiterates that freedom isn’t a given; it often demands significant sacrifice.

At 77 years old, he has spent four years in harsh conditions, but his legacy lives on as a symbol of hope and courage—proof that bravery can indeed alter the course of history.

The final chapter of his story hasn’t been written. On this World Press Freedom Day, I urge those who value free speech to join our fight for his release, so he can reunite with his family and enjoy his twilight years in peace.
