Final American Hostage in Gaza Expected to Be Freed by Hamas, Mainly Due to Trump’s Involvement

Hamas Plans to Release American Hostage

On Sunday, Hamas announced intentions to release Edan Alexander, the last American hostage in Gaza, aiming to gain favor with President Donald Trump and solidify a ceasefire agreement.

The group highlighted that Alexander, a 21-year-old American-Israeli citizen from New Jersey, is part of ongoing efforts to promote a ceasefire, facilitate cross-border activities, and allow humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip.

Alexander was in the Israeli Defense Forces when Hamas launched an attack on October 7, 2023, leading to the deaths of nearly 1,200 Israelis and the abduction of around 250 individuals.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed this development, stating that Alexander would be freed “without compensation or conditions.”

“The US has communicated to Israel that this move is expected to spark discussions regarding the release of additional hostages based on the original framework agreed upon by Israel,” noted the Prime Minister’s Office, referencing US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.

Witkoff himself chimed in on Sunday, indicating, “We’re likely to pick him up tomorrow.”

“We’ve engaged in extensive negotiations with numerous parties,” he added, attributing the successful release largely to Trump’s involvement.

Witkoff plans to arrive in Israel on Monday to facilitate Alexander’s release and reportedly shared with hostage families that there is disagreement over Israel’s current strategy.

He allegedly mentioned to them that the United States is keen on bringing back hostages, although Israel seems unwilling to conclude the conflict.

“Israel continues the war without clear progress,” he reportedly stated. “There is still a chance for Israel and all mediators to work on this.” He emphasized that efforts are being directed toward securing the release of hostages.

An unnamed source indicated that Hamas might be willing to discuss various issues, including the possibility of pressuring Israel to halt operations in Gaza, which could complicate efforts to dismantle Hamas.

In response to the news of Alexander’s upcoming release, the Hostages and Missing Family Forum emphasized that this should mark the start of a broader agreement aimed at releasing all 59 hostages still held.

“There is only one moral and necessary agreement: the return of all hostages at the war’s conclusion,” stated the Forum. “It’s an opportune moment for breakthroughs in negotiations, and the responsibility lies with the Israeli government.”

Additionally, Egypt and Qatar issued a joint statement welcoming the announcement, describing Alexander’s release as a step towards positive gestures and a return to negotiations, including discussions of a ceasefire, the release of prisoners, and ensuring unhindered local aid flow in the region.

Since the events of October 7, 2023, hostages taken by Hamas have been held for over 500 days. Currently, 58 hostages remain in Gaza, with Israeli estimates suggesting that only 24 individuals up to the age of 24 may still be alive.
