Global Leaders Criticize Israel’s Actions in Gaza
Leaders from the UK, France, and Canada expressed strong criticism on Monday regarding Israel’s ongoing military actions in Gaza. They indicated potential consequences for Israel, including heightened pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as the situation escalates.
This response follows an announcement from Israeli forces about a new operation, with Netanyahu asserting that Israel plans to assert control over all of Gaza. Concerns from international experts about significant food shortages have already emerged.
A joint statement from the UK government highlighted that “the Israeli government’s denial of essential humanitarian assistance to the civilian population is unacceptable and risks violating international humanitarian law.” The leaders conveyed their stance against any efforts to expand settlements in the West Bank and mentioned they would consider further actions, including targeted sanctions.
Since early March, Israel has restricted the flow of medical supplies, food, and fuel into Gaza as part of a strategy to compel Hamas to release hostages taken during their attack on Israeli communities on October 7, 2023.
While affirming Israel’s right to defend itself against terrorism, the three leaders described the current escalation as “completely disproportionate” and vowed not to stay silent as Netanyahu’s government undertakes these actions.
Furthermore, they expressed support for ongoing ceasefire efforts spearheaded by the US, Qatar, and Egypt, and reiterated their commitment to recognizing the Palestinian state as part of a broader aim of realizing a two-state solution.
