Khanna fully supports Trump’s drug pricing proposal

Rep. Khanna Supports Trump’s Drug Price Initiative

Rep. Ro Khanna, a Democrat from California, has introduced a bill that aligns with former President Trump’s executive order aimed at reducing prescription drug prices in the U.S. He expressed his willingness to collaborate with the Biden administration and House Republicans to advance this legislation.

Last week, Trump signed an executive order instructing the U.S. trade representative and the Secretary of Commerce to avoid practices that lead to unjustified market price increases. Khanna is hopeful this initiative will gain traction.

Currently, the legislation includes provisions that enforce manufacturers to set prices similar to those in their preferred countries and encourages consumers to purchase medication directly from manufacturers, bypassing middlemen.

Interestingly, Khanna incorporated Trump’s language verbatim into the bill. “We did this so Republicans wouldn’t have any excuses to oppose it,” he stated in an interview. So far, Republican co-sponsors include Anna Paulina Luna from Florida and Andy Biggs from Arizona.

Khanna doesn’t seem too concerned if others want to label the bill as a Republican initiative. “If they want to say it’s someone else’s bill, that’s perfectly fine. I’m just focused on getting it passed,” he remarked. When asked about challenging Republican resolve by proposing the bill, he emphasized his objective of achieving beneficial outcomes for American citizens.

“If this is successful, it’s going to be monumental. I genuinely hope that Trump will champion this cause and garner support from a majority of Republicans,” he added.

In the past, Trump advocated a similar pricing policy, but it faced legal obstacles preventing its implementation. Legal analysts suggest those involved in the ongoing discussions should consider the historical context of these policies when curating new laws.
