Schumer claims Trump changed his stance on increasing the SALT cap

In a recent exchange involving New York’s political landscape, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, who hails from Brooklyn, accused a seasoned Manhattan political figure of abandoning local lawmakers. This accusation came after the individual suggested to GOP lawmakers that they should “let go” of the state and local tax (SALT) deductions.

The issue of the SALT cap is particularly contentious due to New York’s steep taxes, especially in places like Long Island and Westchester County, where residents face some of the highest property tax rates in the state.

Former President Trump has pushed for the SALT deduction cap to be removed in the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election. However, he has recently advised lawmakers such as Rep. Mike Lawler—who represents areas like Rockland, Putnam, and Westchester counties—to ease up on their demands for significant changes to SALT caps.

Schumer has promised to eliminate the SALT cap if Democrats maintain control of the Senate in 2025.

“Some might be surprised that President Trump has made such a complete turnaround, particularly here at the Capitol,” Schumer remarked on the Senate floor.

He continued, “President Trump has come to the Capitol, obviously to send a message to New York Republicans. He’s gone back on his promises regarding SALT.”

Schumer underscored Trump’s earlier commitments made during a campaign stop in Long Island to reduce taxes for New York families.

On Tuesday, he argued that Trump’s assertions would allow Democratic governors to overlook the burden of low tax caps on New York taxpayers by pushing to raise the SALT cap.

“If New York Republicans don’t take a stand against Donald Trump now, they will look foolish. They have repeatedly claimed they would oppose this damaging SALT cap that affects countless New Yorkers,” he said. “Will they now choose to stand up to Donald Trump, or will they back down, letting down millions of New Yorkers?”
