The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office has removed a controversial social media post that expressed sorrow over the bombing of an Iranian facility. This post followed an operation in which U.S. forces targeted three nuclear sites in Iran, as ordered by President Donald Trump under a mission named Operation Midnight Hammer. The intent behind this military action seems to be to disrupt Iran’s nuclear ambitions while preventing any potential diplomatic outreach with Israel.
The Sheriff’s Office initially conveyed their condolences, stating they were thinking of the victims and their families impacted by the bombings. They noted, “Though this tragic event occurred overseas, we are keeping a close eye on the situation with our various partners at local, state, and federal levels.”
However, the reaction from the public was swift and critical, leading to the eventual deletion of the post. A spokesperson later clarified that they were unaware of the post’s content beforehand and recognized it as inappropriate.
In a follow-up, the Sheriff’s Bureau issued a formal apology for what they labeled as “aggressive and inappropriate social media posts.” The statement emphasized that the comments did not reflect the views of Sheriff Robert G. Luna or the agency. The Sheriff’s Office mentioned, “Our role is solely focused on serving and protecting our communities, not debating foreign policy or military approaches.”
They acknowledged the gravity of their words and how they could be interpreted. “We didn’t meet our communication standards, and we recognize the need for improvement,” the statement continued, noting that they would undertake an internal review to investigate how such messages were disseminated and ensure adherence to professional standards in future communications.
The backlash extended online, with some notable figures in law enforcement, including former Sheriff Alejandro Villanueva, calling for accountability and an apology. Others voiced strong criticism, arguing the Sheriff’s Office’s stance was misplaced given the historical tensions involving Iran and the threats made against Israel and the U.S.
Further complicating the situation, a review from the Immigration Policy Research Institute noted that a significant chunk of Iranian immigrants in the U.S. reside in Los Angeles, which might have influenced local perceptions of the Sheriff’s comments.
