Pope Leo’s Financial Strategy
Pope Leo is reaching out to conservative American Catholics and wealthy donors associated with the MAGA movement to address the Vatican’s challenging financial situation.
According to reports, the new Pope is working discreetly to rebuild connections with significant U.S. donors, a group that has dwindled over the years. Catholic President John Yep noted that this decline followed Pope Francis’ more progressive stance and a growing discontent stemming from various corruption scandals, including issues related to the Vatican Bank’s real estate investments in London.
An insider shared with Politico that during the Conclave, Pope Leo was recognized as someone who could effectively restore trust among these high-profile benefactors. His selection came at a time when the Vatican disclosed a deficit of 83 million euros in 2024. Donations from the U.S., historically a vital source of external support, have sharply declined.
“When I speak to some of the country’s most prominent donors, they seem quite pleased,” a conservative Catholic leader told Politico, though no significant contributions have been confirmed thus far.
Pope Leo has already taken steps to attract traditionalists, such as opting to reside in historic Pope residences and reintroducing the Latin liturgy. His election also aligned with “America Week,” which featured a substantial number of donors; reports suggest that as much as 1 billion euros may have been promised in Rome.
While Leo appears to be interested in reform, his initial focus seems to be on revitalizing revenue. His administration has already approved staff bonuses and is evaluating the church’s real estate assets to discover new income avenues.
