Trump Announces 60-Day Ceasefire Agreement with Israel
President Donald Trump has revealed a deal with Israel to implement a 60-day ceasefire and has cautioned Hamas to agree to the terms. This announcement comes just ahead of a visit from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
In his post, Trump stated, “I hope Hamas will recognize the importance of this agreement for the Middle East, because things won’t improve otherwise.”
He also mentioned that his representative had a fruitful discussion with Israeli officials in Gaza and that Israel has accepted the necessary conditions to finalize the ceasefire.
It’s worth noting that Trump had previously declared a ceasefire involving Israel and Iran after significantly reducing Iran’s nuclear capabilities. However, doubts linger about the ceasefire’s effectiveness, especially since both sides have continued military actions beyond the agreed timeline.
“The Catalis and Egyptians, who have worked tirelessly to help foster peace, will present this final proposal. We genuinely hope Hamas will accept it,” he added.
Recent reports suggest that Hamas still holds around 50 hostages taken during a brutal attack in southern Israel in October 2023, with many believed to still be alive.
Earlier on Tuesday, Trump expressed optimism regarding the ceasefire negotiations when responding to media inquiries. “I hope we can reach an agreement; I’m looking forward to it happening next week,” he stated. He emphasized the urgency by repeating, “We want to recover the hostages.”
In Gaza, the Ministry of Health reported over 65,000 Palestinian casualties due to Israeli attacks, asserting that they do not differentiate between combatants and civilians.
