NEA Criticizes Supreme Court Ruling on Education Department Cuts
The president of the National Education Association, which is the largest teachers’ union in the country, expressed strong disapproval of the Supreme Court’s recent decision regarding the Trump administration’s efforts to dismantle the Department of Education.
She stated, “Anyone who cares about American students and public schools should welcome the Supreme Court’s involvement in this case, which upholds the preliminary relief that was ordered by a lower court. However, today’s ruling doesn’t address the core issues of Trump’s plan to eliminate the Department of Education, which I believe is illegal.” She went on to emphasize that parents, educators, and community leaders won’t stay quiet while Trump’s administration threatens the future of public schools across the nation.
The Supreme Court made its ruling in a 6-3 decision, confirming the administration’s ability to terminate hundreds of Department of Education employees. This decision also temporarily halts a previous ruling that had reinstated around 1,400 employees.
Back in March, Education Secretary Linda McMahon took drastic steps by terminating a significant portion of the department’s staff and later announced Trump’s plan to completely shut down the department.
The Supreme Court’s order emerged from two lawsuits filed by 20 states, challenging the layoffs and closures proposed within the education sector. McMahon responded positively to the ruling, arguing that federal agencies have the authority to enforce cuts that would enhance efficiency and accountability, ultimately bringing education back to the states.
She stated, “Today, the Supreme Court has reaffirmed that the President holds the authority to make decisions regarding staffing, organizational structure, and the daily operations of federal agencies, powers granted to him by the Constitution.”
