4:32 PM: Bakersfield, California, police are addressing an ongoing bomb threat and hostage situation at a Chase Bank in the downtown area.

Officials stated that a suspected bank robber allegedly has a bomb attached to himself and claims to be holding at least one person hostage.

“An unidentified male is currently barricaded with unknown members of the community. All resources are available at this site,” said Sergeant Eric Celedon from the Bakersfield Police Department.

In response, law enforcement has cordoned off large portions of downtown Bakersfield and evacuated nearby buildings in the vicinity of the Chase Bank.

To ensure safety, various city facilities, including City Hall and the Bakersfield Police Headquarters, are on lockdown and closed to the public for the time being.

Negotiators from the police are currently on the scene, actively engaging with the suspect in hopes of resolving the standoff safely.

“I can assure the community that we have every necessary resource available on-site: SWAT teams, bomb squads, K9 units, gang teams, and drone teams. Everything needed to achieve the safest outcome is here, not just for the community’s needs but also because you deserve it,” Celedon added.
