Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) sent a letter to the San Antonio police chief on Monday requesting crime statistics from shelters that house illegal immigrants.
of letterobtained by Daily Caller News Foundationasked SAPD to provide detailed data on the number of calls for service to the San Antonio Immigrant Resource Center, which opened in July 2022, and the surrounding area. Roy requested information on the reason for the calls, how many resulted in arrests, and a list of charges. Additionally, the letter requested a report on whether calls required the presence of a Spanish-speaking officer or an interpreter.
A Venezuelan national is suspected of shooting and killing a 19-year-old man who lived in the shelter following an argument.
Roy also asked for a report on the number of smuggling and trafficking cases in which the State Department’s Human Exploitation Unit has been involved since January 2021.
The catalyst for the congressman’s request for additional information was a recent fatal shootout involving SAPD officers and a 25-year-old undocumented immigrant. In late July, three officers responded to a domestic violence call regarding a woman with injuries inflicted by her boyfriend. When police arrived at the home, the suspect, Jorge Jose Chacon Gutierrez, reportedly grabbed a rifle and opened fire. The officers returned fire, killing the suspect. One of the officers was shot multiple times but sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Chacon Gutierrez, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Illegal entry He is scheduled to leave in Eagle Pass, Texas, in November 2023. Border officials then released him, setting an April 2026 trial date.
Roy asked SAPD if they had encountered Chacon Gutierrez before and if he had ever lived at the shelter.
Roy’s letter noted another shooting that occurred near the San Antonio MRC in May, when a Venezuelan national allegedly shot and killed a 19-year-old man who lived in the shelter after an argument.
“Since January 2021, at least 626,232 illegal immigrants have arrived in San Antonio, most of whom are from Venezuela, Nicaragua, Cuba, Honduras and Haiti. From July 7, 2022, when MRC first opened, to present, we have provided shelter to at least 345,907 foreign nationals,” Roy wrote in a letter to the police chief.
He said his constituents are “rightly concerned about the large influx of illegal immigrants” and “deserve answers about the impact that increased illegal immigration has on public safety.”
Roy has asked the authorities for a response by August 26.
SAPD did not respond to DCNF’s request for comment.
