Congressman Reports Incident in Israel
During a recent trip to Israel, Congressman Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) experienced a surprising confrontation that has sparked various reactions. Some supporters are demanding accountability, whereas others believe it’s merely a misunderstanding.
On Saturday, Khanna shared a post detailing allegations of being detained by Israeli settlers and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
“It’s too much, too insulting and humiliating for America. This is how revolutions begin,” Khanna expressed in his post.
In his video, Khanna captured multiple vehicles on the road, with several individuals standing outside a truck. From the footage, it seems the vehicle is obstructing the road.
Two men at the scene reportedly had firearms, and one was in a full military uniform.
Khanna wrote in his post, “Israeli settlers with American-made M4s detained me and other Americans while visiting Palestine. When the IDF came, they sided with the settlers and continued detaining us.” He added, “They made a big mistake. We’ll know more soon.”
The original video has already gained significant attention, racking up 10 million views on X.
According to a report from the New York Times, during Khanna’s three-day visit, he and other Democratic lawmakers went to the abandoned Palestinian Bedouin village of Khirbet Zanuta. The report stated, “A car with gunmen stopped and blocked the narrow road out of the village,” where the men allegedly harassed and mocked Khanna and his team. When the Israeli army finally arrived, instead of breaking up the confrontation, they too started blocking the roads.
Khanna reflected on the fear the situation instilled in him, stating, “I felt powerless. Imagine how an occupied Palestinian feels every day. If you can make an American member of Congress feel powerless for 90 minutes.”
The Israeli military acknowledged being dispatched to the area after receiving reports of settlers blocking vehicles near the village. According to their statement, “Upon arrival, the military dispersed the Israeli civilians and allowed the vehicles to proceed.”
On Monday, Khanna’s team reposted body camera footage of what he called the “unprecedented and unlawful detention of Americans by a foreign country.” A video shared by Nadav Wieman shows a man approaching others in a car, but Khanna himself is not clearly identified in the footage.
Wieman commented, “The IDF is lying about Congressman Khanna’s detention. I was on the ground with him, and we were effectively held captive by settlers and soldiers. The IDF did not disperse the violent settlers as they claimed; they sided with them.”
In contrast, voices like former Ambassador Mike Huckabee argued differently. He stated in an interview that there was confusion due to Khanna’s failure to follow the appropriate protocols. Israeli Ambassador Michael Reiter mentioned that there was just a question about Khanna’s visa and that he didn’t coordinate his trip properly.
Huckabee added that the situation was indeed unfortunate and criticized the handling of it. He went on to express concern over how American representatives are treated abroad.
While the incident raises many questions, it is clear that it has left an impact, igniting discussions among lawmakers and the public about safety and accountability in foreign engagements.
