Political Prosecutions: Aim or Deterrent?

There’s an unsettling question around the prosecution of political opponents: is it about punishing those in power, or is it more about discouraging others from entering politics?

This concern arises from the remarks made by Michigan Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin regarding legal actions against members of the Trump administration. BlazeTV host Auron MacIntyre expressed his shock at her bluntness.

“Slotkin essentially indicated that we need to go after everyone in the Trump administration, to the point of suing them into bankruptcy, imprisoning them,” MacIntyre shared during a segment on News Fist. “The idea is to intimidate any young conservative considering a role in that administration to think twice,” he continued.

He emphasized the ramifications: “The fear could be so pervasive that entire generations of conservatives shy away from serving in the executive branch.” This fear, after all, could fundamentally alter how presidential administrations function.

In her comments, Slotkin asserted, “I want to examine these key cases, not just against the president, but also targeting those who supported him. I want fresh graduates to think, ‘Working for the Trump administration? Sounds fun, but what if it brings a whole bunch of issues I don’t want to deal with?'”

She added, “I need to send a strong deterrent message.” MacIntyre remarked, “We can clearly see the strategy here. If you can scare people away from the administration, bankrupt them, or toss them in jail, that essentially serves as a punishment in itself.”

MacIntyre pointed out that while this may not lead directly to imprisonment, those targeted could still end up spending significant amounts defending their reputations. “What she’s saying out loud is that her intent is to deter future conservatives from even considering service. It’s quite calculated,” he noted.

Having worked as a CIA analyst, Slotkin seems aware of the implications of her words, suggesting intentions to leverage this situation to ensure that no one feels inclined to join a Republican administration in the future.

The News Fist host was taken aback, stating, “It’s ironic that these individuals preach about fostering civil society and democracy.” He raised the question: “What does democracy look like? It seems like it involves running a campaign of intimidation against the entire opposition to deplete their ranks of talent.”

MacIntyre further argued that forcing people out of mainstream politics could lead to the creation of alternative networks or movements. He observed, “If you marginalize enough individuals, you risk pushing them to form their own distinct group, creating a divide further from the mainstream.”
