DHS Secretary Critiques Gubernatorial Candidate’s View on ICE

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin has taken aim at California gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer, suggesting he doesn’t fully grasp the functions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Mullin criticized Steyer’s assertion made during a debate where he declared ICE should be “abolished,” labeling it as “criminal” from top to bottom.

During his appearance on “The Ingraham Angle,” Mullin expressed his disagreement, arguing that the California gubernatorial candidates don’t have the authority to dismantle federal immigration agencies. “He doesn’t have the authority to do that and he’s speaking with the left side of his mouth,” Mullin remarked, implying that Steyer’s understanding of ICE is flawed.

Recent polling positions Steyer as the frontrunner for California governor, with him leading at 21% among likely voters, followed closely by Republican Steve Hilton at 18%. Steyer’s rise coincides with Eric Swalwell exiting the race amid sexual misconduct allegations.

Mullin defended ICE, stating that the agency’s role is strictly to enforce U.S. immigration laws. “ICE simply enforces the nation’s immigration policies, deports individuals, and pursues criminals who shouldn’t be here,” he asserted. He highlighted that ICE operates within legal parameters, aiming to safeguard citizens including those who may support criminal decriminalization.

He also pointed out that fellow California Democrats have had an anti-ICE approach and have the power to amend ICE’s functions through Congress. “If they think ICE is so criminal, then they have options,” Mullin stated, emphasizing that ICE operates under laws established by Congress.

In light of recent developments, the new DHS Secretary has affirmed his commitment to continue the aggressive deportation policies of the Trump administration while emphasizing a selective admissions approach for immigrants. “We’re looking for the right kind of immigrants,” he stated, acknowledging the importance of immigrants to the nation but differentiating between legal and illegal entries.

Mullin concluded with a firm stance: “We are not slowing down. If we need to assist those wishing to leave, we will.” This perspective on immigration enforcement continues to generate a diverse array of opinions and reactions.
