Georgia State Judge order Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis will pay a $54,000 fine for violating the Public Records Act in connection with the election interference case.
Willis was leading a criminal case against President Donald Trump over allegations that he attempted to overturn the official outcome of the 2020 presidential election. In December, she was removed from a case surrounding her relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade.
“We are proud to have judges who are willing to hold people responsible for their power.”
Fulton County Superior Court Judge Rachel Krauss said Willis was “hostile” to a record request from his attorney Ashley Merchant and “deliberately” violated state law regarding public records. Klaus said Willis must pay court and attorney fees and attorney fees to the merchant who applied to disqualify Willis.
The merchant represents Michael Roman, a former campaign staffer for the 2020 Trump campaign.
The judge quoted testimony From Dexter Bond, Associate District Attorney. This proved that requests from merchants were treated differently from others that the office received.
“Mr. Bond's treatment of merchants' requests in this way shows a lack of integrity,” the order read. “The defendant's failure was intentional, not in good faith, and was practically unfounded and troublesome.”
The District Attorney's Office is also ordered to demonstrate efforts to properly track requested document searches.
The merchant praised the ruling on social media.
“I'm proud to have judges who are willing to protect people's power when they ignore the law!!!” she I wrote it.
Despite controversy over her involvement in the Trump incident, Willis was overwhelmingly re-election against the Republican challenger in November. She won with just 32% support against her Democratic base competitors with 68% support.
Willis was given 30 days to pay the fine, but the DA's office He told WSB-TV He intended to appeal the decision.
Trump and the other defendants in the case pleaded not guilty.
