Investigation into MLB’s Treatment of Christian Player

Florida Attorney General James Usmayer has initiated an investigation regarding Major League Baseball’s (MLB) decision to issue warnings to a Christian player who displayed a Bible verse on his hat during Pride Night. Usmayer sent letters to MLB commissioner Rob Manfred, indicating that this inquiry aims to explore possible religious discrimination in how the league enforces its uniform rules.

Usmayer expressed concern, stating, “While Major League Baseball claims it does not condone discrimination based on religion, its actions suggest otherwise. When MLB endorses its own ideological messages while reprimanding Christian expressions, it crosses the line into religious discrimination, which is unacceptable in Florida.”

Earlier this month, MLB warned three pitchers from the San Francisco Giants for showcasing Bible verses on their hats during the event. One of the pitchers, Landen Loop, displayed the verse “Genesis 9:12-16,” while teammates JT Brubaker and Ryan Walker had similar verses on their Pride Night hats.

Loop commented that the verse represents “God’s covenant and… God’s faithfulness and mercy,” referring to it as a symbol established by God. Usmayer underscored that MLB’s claim of rule violations seems selective, arguing that players who support secular messages often go unpunished, whereas those expressing religious sentiments face warnings.

He pointed out that MLB has been inconsistent in its rule enforcement. While the league maintains a prohibition on writing messages on uniforms, they have allowed expressions related to social justice, including Black Lives Matter patches and other similar messages. “Anyone observing these inconsistencies in enforcement can see that MLB selectively targets religious expressions while endorsing others,” Usmayer stated.

Usmayer further noted that the league must develop a wide-ranging policy document that addresses various aspects including uniform regulations and the history of enforcement since 2020. The policy should also clarify how they differentiate between permitted expressions and religious sentiments.

This investigation was prompted, in part, by concerns raised by the Department of Justice regarding religious discrimination against Christian players, which had been referred to MLB. Usmayer emphasized the legal requirement for employers to make accommodations for the religious practices of their employees.

In a previous statement, the San Francisco Giants expressed their support for Pride Night but acknowledged the personal choices of individual players and the resulting emotional reactions from the LGBTQ+ community. The situation continues to evolve, as the scrutiny on MLB’s policies and actions regarding religious expression deepens.
