Illegal Immigrant Charged with Murder in Florida
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) plans to transfer an illegal Bangladeshi immigrant to Florida authorities. This individual, who was deported during the initial Trump administration, re-entered the United States unlawfully and is now charged with murdering his sister-in-law, following his release by the Biden administration.
DHS confirmed that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has moved to detain Akboor Mia, also known by the alias Shahidul Islam. The request aims to keep him in federal custody after he completes the ongoing state criminal proceedings.
Mia first came to the U.S. in 2016 under the Obama administration. He was apprehended by ICE in February 2018, and later that year, an immigration judge ordered his deportation.
After being sent back to Bangladesh in January 2019, he illegally re-entered the U.S. and, despite facing federal charges, was released on March 19, 2022, under the Biden administration.
Charges Filed for Sister-in-Law’s Murder
DHS has filed a request with Florida authorities to transfer Mia to federal custody so that immigration officials can take over once state charges are resolved.
Monica Islam disappeared on May 2, 2025, shortly after leaving a convenience store in Eustis. Hours later, her body was discovered along a Mount Dora road, with investigators concluding she died from a gunshot wound.
Evidence collected included Monica’s DNA found inside Mia’s car, as well as a bullet and signs of a shattered passenger window.
Authorities Capture Suspect Fleeing Justice
Following the murder, Mia reportedly fled to New York but was later apprehended by U.S. Marshals and extradited back to Florida, where he faces first-degree murder charges.
Lauren Biss, acting DHS assistant secretary, stated, “This illegal alien from Bangladesh was charged with murder for allegedly shooting and killing his sister-in-law in Florida. He thought he could escape justice by fleeing to the sanctuary of New York. Thanks to our law enforcement partners, this criminal illegal alien was arrested and removed from our city. ICE filed a motion to detain him so he would never be released into our country again.”
A Lake County grand jury has indicted him on charges of first-degree murder, and prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. They found suspicious online searches made by Mia on the day of the murder, which has raised additional concerns.
After the shooting, Mia is reported to have rented a car and made his way to New York before law enforcement, through collaboration among various agencies, successfully tracked him down.
