Former NYPD inspector cautions that social media is inciting political violence.

Shooting at the White House Correspondents' Dinner prompts concerns about safety

The recent incident involving a gunman attempting to breach the White House Correspondents’ Dinner serves as a troubling indicator of the increasing political violence fueled by social media, according to former New York City police inspector Paul Mauro. He expressed his views on a Sunday news program, drawing comparisons to the post-9/11 era, reminding viewers of the heightened tensions during the “era of terrorism” or “counterterrorism.”

Mauro noted that this kind of violence has begun to manifest more prominently on the internet, with social media acting as a platform for spreading extremist ideologies, which perhaps had less traction previously.

This discussion follows a serious incident involving a 31-year-old suspect, identified as Cole Thomas Allen, who allegedly confronted a Secret Service checkpoint and was armed with multiple weapons at the event.

After reportedly opening fire on a Secret Service agent while wearing a bulletproof vest, Allen was shot and subsequently taken to the hospital. The agent fired back but did not hit Allen.

Officials with insight into the investigation revealed that Allen indicated he believed he was a target of the Trump administration when he was arrested.

During a separate NBC News appearance, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche did not elaborate on who Allen’s specific targets were. Following the event, there’s been a strong backlash from lawmakers and authorities, urging caution in rhetoric to mitigate future incidents.

Mauro further commented on how individuals can easily find online communities that validate their views, underscoring the concerns about the defendant’s exposure to radical ideas online. He speculated that once investigators complete their search, they will likely uncover evidence of Allen engaging with this kind of ideology, which he may have felt compelled to act upon due to external influences.

Similar alarm was raised after a prior assassination attempt against former President Trump and another incident involving a political figure on a college campus in 2025. Thankfully, all attendees, including Trump and other officials, were safely evacuated from the dinner.
