Garcia, Whitesides advance in competitive California House race

Rep. Mike Garcia (R-Calif.) and Democrat George Whiteside are expected to advance to the November election in California’s 27th Congressional District, according to Decision Desk headquarters.

Garcia will face off against Whitesides, a former NASA chief of staff and CEO of Virgin Galactic, this fall. Garcia represents a seat in the Southern California House of Representatives north of Los Angeles.

Garcia, a former U.S. Navy officer, defeated Democrat Christy Smith in a special election in May 2020 to take the remaining seat held by former Rep. Katie Hill (D-Calif.) in the 25th Congressional District. I entered parliament for the first time. He won his first full term victory against Smith in the same district later that year by less than 1 percentage point.

After redistricting, he ran against Smith again, this time in the 27th Congressional District due to redistricting, and won by more than six points.

The Cook Political Report, a nonpartisan election handicapping paper, rates Garcia’s seat as a “tossup,” but President Biden was expected to win the seat by more than 12 points in 2020. Dew.
