High school students in California stage a walkout in response to football captain's 'Cornell 7' message.

Over 200 high school students in California staged a walkout in protest of a football captain’s social media post, prompting inquiries into the school’s accountability as the team forfeits its next game.

This demonstration took place on Friday at Piner Junior Senior High School in Santa Rosa, following an Instagram post from the captain. In this post, he wrote “Free the Cornell 7,” a phrase linked to seven students accused of gang raping a Cornell University student during a fraternity event in 2024.

Students participated in the walkout because they felt that the captain had not faced adequate consequences for his comments, as reported by local media.

According to an anonymous parent of a Piner cheerleader, while the captain was prohibited from attending a team dinner that Thursday, details regarding any further disciplinary measures remain unclear, leaving the school’s full response in question.

The uproar coincides with a separate issue for Piner’s football program: the Prospectors had to forfeit their scheduled game on Saturday against Archie Williams High School in San Anselmo.

Head coach Adam Rosenstein mentioned to the media that the team only had five healthy linemen available, confirming the forfeit on Friday evening.

In terms of their record, this forfeiture leaves Piner with a 2-4 overall standing and an 0-2 mark in the conference, according to sports statistics sources.

The situation not only reflects local tensions but also fits within a broader context, as protests have erupted in cities like Los Angeles, Seattle, and Philadelphia related to the Cornell case, with demonstrators claiming the university mishandled its investigation into the rape allegations.

Despite these wider demonstrations, the immediate concern at Piner focuses on the captain’s post and if the school’s response was appropriate.

To date, it is uncertain whether school officials have taken any further disciplinary action beyond excluding him from the team dinner, based on available reports.
