Iran claims World Cup ticket distribution has been revoked days before the event: 'Raises significant concerns'

Iran Halts Ticket Sales Just Before World Cup

On June 9, Iran’s Football Federation made a surprising announcement: ticket sales for the upcoming World Cup have been stopped abruptly. This came just as fans were preparing to travel to support their team, leaving many in a difficult position given their prior arrangements.

The World Cup kicks off on Thursday, with Iran set to play its opening matches in Group G. They’re scheduled to face New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15 and Belgium on June 21, followed by a game against Egypt in Seattle on June 26.

The federation indicated that while they had begun the ticket sales process, they are no longer able to provide tickets to fans. “This is despite the fact that many Iranian football fans had already made the necessary plans to attend the matches, trusting the officially announced process,” they lamented.

They argued that denying Iranian supporters access to official ticket allocations contradicts the spirit of international competitions and undermines equality among countries participating in the event.

Each participating federation in the World Cup generally receives 8% of the tickets for their matches, distributed based on their own criteria. However, the FFIRI didn’t specify who made the decision to halt ticket sales. They urged FIFA to maintain neutrality and prevent political issues from overshadowing the sporting event.

FIFA has not yet responded to questions regarding this situation.

Concerns about Iran’s participation have lingered since recent tensions, including U.S. and Israeli airstrikes against the country, heightened regional instability. In light of visa uncertainties, the federation relocated the team’s training camp from Arizona to Mexico, seeking to minimize the team’s exposure in the U.S.

After what seemed like endless uncertainty, U.S. officials granted visas to all players last week, just ten days before their first match. However, some staff members remained in limbo regarding their visa status.

Recently, U.S. officials informed that all necessary visas for Iran’s World Cup participation were issued. FIFA later shared that their General Secretary, Matthias Grafström, had “positive discussions” with the FFIRI president after the team arrived in Mexico for the tournament.

“The team is currently in Mexico,” Grafström stated, adding that FIFA intends to continue working closely with the Iranian federation to ensure a positive experience for the team and delegation.
