Atlanta Falcons’ James Pierce Jr. Enters Pretrial Program

James Pierce Jr., an edge rusher for the Atlanta Falcons, has agreed to join a pretrial intervention program. His lawyers believe this could lead to the resolution of three felony charges related to a domestic dispute involving his former girlfriend, WNBA player Rikea Jackson, reported on February 7.

“Mr. Pierce Jr. will participate in a six-month diversion program. After this period, if he has no violations, the state will drop all felony and misdemeanor charges,” stated Jacob Nunez, one of Pierce’s attorneys, in remarks shared with the Associated Press.

In a separate statement, both Nunez and attorney Yale Sanford mentioned, “James is concentrating on moving ahead, reuniting with his teammates, and maintaining a high performance level as a player, both on and off the field.”

The Falcons have not yet addressed inquiries regarding Pierce’s standing with the team.

Initially reported by Atlanta’s WSB-TV, this development comes on the first day of the NFL Draft, exactly one year since the Falcons picked Pierce as the 26th overall selection in the 2025 draft. He had a strong rookie season, leading the team with 10.5 sacks and setting a franchise record with 45 quarterback pressures.

However, the uncertainty surrounding his position on the team remains, especially with these felony allegations. First-year coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed on April 8 that Pierce was absent from the start of the team’s voluntary offseason training.

General manager Ian Cunningham mentioned on Monday that there were no new updates regarding Pierce, stating, “Everything is status quo.”

Previously, on March 13, charges were filed against Pierce in Miami-Dade County for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, fleeing and eluding police, and resisting an officer with violence; he also faces a misdemeanor charge of stalking. Notably, an additional charge of aggravated assault on a police officer was dismissed.

According to reports from the incident, Jackson had attempted to reach the Doral Police Department for help, expressing that she was trying to escape from Pierce after he allegedly “intentionally hit the back of her car with his SUV.” Furthermore, while officers were attempting to arrest him, Pierce is accused of ignoring commands to get on the ground and then driving away, allegedly striking an officer’s knee with his vehicle to avoid capture.
